The Maharajas and Mughal Magnificence Sale at Christie's
It's only fitting that my first post on jewelry for collectors is about jewelry from India. I have traveled to India many times over my career, and have been fortunate to be on the receiving end of their hospitality and joyful nature. Their creativity and artisanship is no less impressive. Some of the finest jewels in the world are crafted in India, and likewise, some of the most spectacular jewels have been inspired by Indian culture and crafted by the large European jewelers, namely Cartier. I have always been fascinated by the influence of Indian culture on the most world renowned jewelers and this collection shows why.
On June 19th in New York City, Christie's held a sale of nearly 400 items dating back over as many years, from the Al Thani Collection. Read about it here (written by a true jewelry champion and historian who was present at the sale) and see a few of my favorite items from the sale below.
