An Inside Look at the Art of Bespoke Jewelry Design
BY Meredith JaymeDISCOVER OUR CUSTOM JEWELRY PROCESS AND WHY WE THINK BESPOKE IS SO SPECIAL
In an era of mass production and instant accessibility, bespoke jewelry offers something increasingly rare: intentionality. A bespoke piece is not simply purchased, it is imagined, developed, and brought to life through collaboration, craftsmanship, and personal storytelling. It becomes more than an accessory or luxury object. It becomes a reflection of memory, identity, love, and legacy. At Lindsey Scoggins Studio, bespoke jewelry is rooted in the belief that the pieces we wear most closely should feel deeply personal. Whether creating an engagement ring, heirloom redesign, sentimental symbol, or one of a kind statement piece, the process is designed to transform emotion into something tangible and enduring.
WHAT IS BESPOKE JEWELRY?
Bespoke jewelry refers to a fully custom piece created specifically for an individual client. Unlike ready-to-wear jewelry, a bespoke design begins from scratch and is shaped entirely around the client’s aesthetic, lifestyle, inspirations, and story. Every detail is intentionally considered, from the silhouette and proportions to the stone selection, setting style, and finishing techniques. The result is a piece that cannot be replicated because it was designed uniquely for the person who commissioned it. True bespoke jewelry exists at the intersection of fine art and craftsmanship - highly personal pieces created with permanence and individuality in mind.
WHY BESPOKE FEELS SO MEANINGFUL
Jewelry often marks life’s most important moments - engagements, anniversaries, milestones, births, transformations, and personal achievements. The bespoke process allows those moments to become woven directly into the design itself. Rather than choosing something that already exists, clients become part of the creative journey. The piece evolves through conversations, sketches, gemstone sourcing, and collaborative refinement, making the experience itself as meaningful as the final jewel. The emotional connection created through this process transforms jewelry into something far more lasting. Bespoke pieces become future heirlooms - objects layered with memory, sentiment, and personal history that can be passed down for generations.
OUR BESPOKE PROCESS
At Lindsey Scoggins Studio, every bespoke commission begins with a conversation. We explore not only visual references and design preferences, but also the emotional significance behind the piece including how it will be worn, what it represents, and how it should feel. From there, the studio develops initial concepts and sculptural studies informed by Lindsey’s signature aesthetic - architectural, timeless, and deeply personal. Diamonds and gemstones are sourced specifically for each project, focusing on exceptional beauty, individuality, and character rather than simply standardized perfection. Clients are guided through each phase of the process, from concept development and stone selection to final refinements and production. Every detail is carefully considered to ensure the finished piece feels cohesive, wearable, and entirely unique. Once finalized, each design is handcrafted by master jewelers in New York’s historic Diamond District using traditional fine jewelry techniques and exceptional attention to detail. The process is intentionally meticulous and collaborative, resulting in pieces designed to endure both physically and emotionally over time.
BEYOND TRADITIONAL LUXURY
What makes bespoke jewelry so compelling is not simply exclusivity, it is intimacy. The experience creates a deeper connection between the wearer and the piece itself. Every gemstone, proportion, texture, and design choice carries intention. In a world increasingly driven by trends and immediacy, bespoke jewelry offers something slower, more thoughtful, and ultimately more lasting. It allows jewelry to become personal architecture - wearable objects designed not only to be beautiful, but to hold meaning. At its core, bespoke jewelry is about creating something that could belong to no one else. A piece that reflects not just personal style, but personal history and is designed for the present moment, and for the generations that will inherit it after.
A FEW OF OUR BESPOKE COMMISSIONS
One of the most rewarding aspects of bespoke jewelry is the opportunity to create pieces that could never exist twice. Over the years, the studio has worked on commissions ranging from sculptural engagement rings and modern bridal suites to heirloom redesigns, symbolic jewelry, and bold statement pieces centered around extraordinary gemstones. Some commissions begin with a single remarkable stone or an inherited gem. Others begin with sentiment - inherited family jewelry reimagined into something contemporary while preserving its emotional significance. We’ve created architectural bezel set rings, asymmetrical gemstone necklaces, modern signet rings, colorful eternity bands, and all types of deeply personal pieces designed to commemorate milestones, relationships, and transformations. What makes these commissions especially meaningful is the collaboration behind them. Every bespoke piece reflects not only the studio’s aesthetic language, but also the individuality of the client. Their story, style, memories, and vision are translated into something tangible and enduring. No two projects are ever approached in exactly the same way, which is what makes the process so creatively fulfilling. For us, the most memorable commissions are the pieces that feel emotionally connected to the person wearing them - jewelry that becomes instantly personal, and eventually, deeply heirloom-worthy.
WHERE TO BEGIN
Beginning a bespoke jewelry project should feel inspiring, not intimidating. The process starts simply with a conversation - an opportunity to discuss ideas, inspirations, aesthetics, lifestyle, and the significance behind the piece you want to create. Clients often arrive with varying levels of direction. Some have detailed references and specific gemstone preferences, while others begin with only a feeling, a story, or a moment they want the piece to represent. Both approaches are equally valuable. Part of the atelier experience is helping refine and shape those ideas into a fully realized design. From there, the studio guides you through each stage of the commission process, including concept development, gemstone sourcing, design refinement, and final craftsmanship. Throughout the experience, the goal is to create something that feels thoughtful, collaborative, and deeply personal, a piece designed specifically for you and no one else. Whether you are envisioning an engagement ring, a modern heirloom, a statement piece, or a redesign of sentimental jewelry, the bespoke process allows you to create something with permanence, individuality, and meaning that extends far beyond the piece itself.
