HOW TO CHOOSE AN ENGAGEMENT RING: WHERE TO BEGIN

BY LINDSEY SCOGGINS STUDIO

IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN, START HERE

If you're wondering how to choose an engagement ring, we would love to help. Deciding on such an important piece is not something to be taken lightly but it shouldn't be stressful or overwhelming. We wanted to make sure that anyone who doesn't have experience buying fine jewelry or diamonds has some guidance navigating the process. Below, we'll break down a few steps to take if you are just starting out and are wondering where to begin. We hope this will help to reassure you and make the process of choosing an engagement ring as easy as possible.

1. RESEARCH & LEARN

It's important to have a general understanding of engagement rings, diamonds, metal types and pricing. Being aware of different diamond shapes and the four C's (cut, clarity, color and carat weight) will help you to feel confident while looking at different styles and talking to jewelers. You'll also want to make sure your diamond is GIA (Gemological Institute of America) or IGI (International Gemological Institute) certified. Understanding lab grown and natural diamonds is also very important. There is a lot to say here, so make sure to research this from multiple sources. Metal types are another factor to consider. Do you prefer platinum, or yellow or rose gold? Explore pricing differences between different size and quality diamonds to have a general idea of how much things cost. 2. EXPLORE SETTINGS & TRY ON RINGS

Once you've done some research and have a better understanding of diamonds and engagement rings, it's a great time to start exploring different settings and styles. Trying on different rings to get an idea of what diamond shapes you prefer can be so helpful. Take pictures so you can look back on them and refresh your memory - or use to drop hints. Make sure to take note of your ring size. There are so many setting options available, so if you don't find your dream ring right away, don't be discouraged. We create all of our engagement rings exclusively for each client, so any custom design is possible.

3. DETERMINE YOUR BUDGET & PRIORITIES

After trying on rings or getting an idea of what type of style your partner likes, now is a good time to establish a budget and your priorities. Is diamond size your most important priority or do you prefer a colorless, internally flawless diamond? Do you prefer a traditional setting or something that will stand out? How do you use your hands on a daily basis? Will the ring need to be extra durable for any reason?

When it comes to setting a budget, make sure that you feel comfortable with the range you choose. There is no right or wrong way to determine what that number is - as long as you feel good about it. You should also have an idea of when you might need the ring. Many custom rings can take one to two months or longer depending on the complexity of the design.

4. TALK TO BRANDS & DESIGNERS

Now that you have a pretty good idea of the ring and diamond that you are looking for, it's time to get serious. Whether you want to revisit the places that you already went to try on rings or want to start fresh, it's important to research brands and go with one that you trust and matches your style. A brand or designer should be eager to answer any and all questions you might have and be honest with pricing and design possibilities.

5. DECISION TIME

Don't rush into making a decision unless you feel entirely confident moving forward and know the ring is exactly what you want. You should feel totally at ease after deciding on a setting and diamond. At this point, all of your questions should have been answered and you can celebrate knowing your engagement ring is being brought to life. We know there is so much that goes into this process so please feel free to contact us with any questions!
